To see Paris and … stunned by French housing

A huge number of people dream of visiting the city of love and romance, the city of the Eiffel Tower, royal palaces and the European Disneyland. Here I am from among those. Only I, in my usual manner, decided not just to visit the capital of France, as an ordinary tourist, but to live there. Preferably at least six months. Better yet, a year.

With this firm intention, I bought a ticket, and within a couple of weeks, the board of the French national airline Airfrance brought me to Charles De Gaulle’s huge airport with comfort, delicious food and free wine, from where my misadventures began.

Back in the homeland, it was decided to finally decide on the choice of housing in which I will spend this Paris year, already being directly in Paris. And in the first days, while I will search, book an apartment through Airbnb. Since nothing special was needed for these early days, I chose a small studio apartment under the roof in one of the old houses in Montmartre. In such, as is commonly believed, poor artists settled, then gaining greatness.

A week in such a studio cost me 500 euros. And it seemed to me that it is very expensive. But I decided not to spoil my upcoming adventure with negative thoughts. Moreover, it was expected upon arrival to rent another apartment, much better and cheaper. Dreaming.

At first it turned out that the apartment, shot through Airbnb, despite all its beautiful photos and a vivid description that promised a wonderful stay, has an area of ​​only 6 square meters. meters. And on these square meters everything is located – a bed, a kitchen, and even a toilet with a shower. The bed literally occupied the entire space. You open the front door and immediately rest against the bed. Even the door mat does not fit. All that remained was a tiny strip from the wall to the bed the width of a person’s foot, through which they managed to walk into the shower and toilet. The toilet itself with a shower occupied less than one square meter, it was impossible to turn around there, washing was generally torture. A ceiling the height of my height (180 cm) did not even allow you to move around the apartment, straightening up.

“Do not be upset. This is just a week while I am looking for a normal apartment, ”I told myself, for the tenth time breaking my forehead against a chandelier hanging from the ceiling. Seriously? Why is there a chandelier with such a high ceiling? I still did not know that the week would stretch for two months, and finding a normal apartment would be almost impossible.

And all because rental property in France is completely different from what Russian citizens imagine. We are used to choosing an apartment from a variety of options, and dictating terms to the owners, since demand is approximately equal to supply. And in many parts of the country it does not reach him at all. In Paris, demand far exceeds supply. Multiply this by the scrupulousness, pedantry and often paranoia of Europeans, and you will get a known disease of the region below the lower back, starting with the letter “G”.

When you select one of the advertisements for renting an apartment and contact the owner, he with an importance in his voice appoints you the viewing time. Arriving at the designated time, you find out that several more people are claiming this apartment with you. And a few – the concept is loose. Both 3 people and 15 can come to the viewing. And most of them will be evil emigrants who do not quite accept the other applicants in a friendly manner. And now you walk around this apartment, sort of looking at it, and you feel hateful looks on yourself.

Owners at this time are eyeing the applicants. But in the end, almost always choose the French or these same immigrants. Russians are apparently not in fashion now. And when after 10 views your happy hour still strikes, and the property owner refuses all applicants, and you promise to think and contact later, it turns out absolutely terrible. Before the final decision is made, you should provide a lot of evidence of your solvency – bank statements, an employment contract, and even recommendations from other people, which will say several times that you are beautiful and wonderful. And it’s better if it says that you are a “rough diamond”. The most difficult subjects in Univer were to hand over, and even easier than renting an apartment in Paris.

And even despite such exorbitant requirements, rental prices are very high. Paris is divided into counties. The highest prices in the first four central districts. This is where the Louvre and Notre Dame Cathedral are. In these districts, the cost of a killed apartment of 6-10 square meters. m can easily be 1 thousand euros per month. And before entering, you must certainly give a deposit for 2-3 months rent. The amounts obtained are cosmic.
